Nominations for F.O.R. San Bernard Board of Directors Requested
By John Wallace
The interim Board of Directors for F.O.R. San Bernard met Saturday July 15th and established the structure and election procedures for the permanent Board of Directors.
The permanent Board of Directors will be comprised of no more than fifteen persons. In this initial board, 1/3 of the members will serve for 3 years, 1/3 will serve for 2 years, and 1/3 of the group will serve for only one year. Each year, five positions on the board rotate off and their positions will be up for vote. Only one family member can serve on the board, or run for an open board position. Each board member may only serve two consecutive terms - or a maximum of six years - and then must vacate the position for at least one year before being eligible to serve on the board for a third time.
Board candidates do not have to live on the river to be considered for election. Candidates for election must, however, be interviewed and qualified by the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee is made up of the retiring members of the Board and whomever the board appoints to serve on the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee will contact the potential nominees for election to determine their individual capabilities, goals for the F.O.R. San Bernard organization and willingness to fulfill the commitments and responsibilities of a board member.
This year’s election is unique in that we will be electing the entire fifteen member board. This year’s nominating committee is also unique in that it is comprised of the interim Board of Directors who have indicated they are not interested in running for a three year term of office at this time (similar to retiring board members). Several members of the interim Board of Directors have expressed an interest as becoming nominees for the first board of F.O.R. San Bernard. Those members are Pat Webb, Tom Valliere, Teresa Schlumpberger, Nancy Kanter, and Jan Edwards.
The Nominating Committee hopes to receive at least ten more qualified nominees. The cut off date for nominations is August 15th which allows the Nominating Committee sufficient time to qualify each candidate, and add them to the ballot for the September 16 election. A nomination form is being developed and will be posted on this website as soon as it is available -hopefully within the next week.
This is YOUR chance to be more involved in F.O.R. San Bernard. If you are interested in serving on the board, or if you know someone who would be interested in serving, get their name and contact information to the Nominating Committee. Once all of the candidates are identified, a ballot for the election will be developed.
Should fifteen or fewer candidates be identified, the interim Board of Directors will ask the public to ratify the new board at the September election meeting. Each will be given two minutes at the public meeting to introduce themselves and their goals to the public prior to voting. If there are more than fifteen nominees, the public will be asked to select fifteen persons from all of the names on a written ballot. Nominations will not be taken from the floor and write-in candidates will not be counted. Those persons obtaining the most votes will become board members.
So friends, this is your chance to get involved with your river. First, send in your nominations by August 15th, and second, come to the September election and VOTE !! . CIAP grant nominations delayed.
Hi all: Have been notified that the CIAP grant
nominations (this is the state portion of the Energy Bill
money) have been delayed once again to the July 31st.
The grant applications were originally to be awarded the
14th of July which then got moved to the 18th; and now the
31st.
This funding is critical for getting the funds necessary to
open the mouth of the closed San Bernard River. Please
contact your state representatives and request they call
Commissioner Patterson (GLO) and Governor Perry and ask them
to remember the San Bernard River's situation - that it no
longer flows to the Gulf. Locally, your state
representatives are Senator Kyle Janek (contact
him through
Michael.Wright@senate.state.tx.us) and
Representative
Dennis Bonnen (contact him through linda.winder@house.state.tx.us). Any
help they can give us by calling Commissioner Patterson or
Governor Perry could possibly help.
Disclaimer: The request to contact your state
representatives is in no way an endorsement of any candidate
or political party.
