Friends Of the River Community
Center
Officially Opens
On an
out-of-the-way little back road
stands a quaint little
building. Surrounding it is a
beautiful little park on the edge
of the sleepy San Bernard River.
Most of its days this little piece
of paradise sits quietly watching
the river flow by. The neighbors
pass in their cars and on their
daily jaunts through the
neighborhood, walking their dogs,
themselves or even running to stay
in shape. Well, Friday, November the
9th, the little house threw its
doors open wide and shouted to the
world "come on in and visit
Friends, all are welcome here".
And come the people did. Open House
at the Friends Of the River San
Bernard's newly acquired home
was a huge success. With the smell
of chilli dogs and the warm feeling
of Friendship drifting through the
air, about 100 people came to visit
and to check out the renovated
building and grounds.
Friends started arriving early.
Then, a ribbon cutting ceremony,
hosted by the Brazoria Chamber
of Commerce, formally kicked
things off. After the ribbon cutting
ceremony, Dianna Kile, representing
Congressman Ron Paul, presented a
U.S. Flag, which had been flown over
our nation's Capitol, in honor of
the Friends Of the River Community
Center Open House. Finally, Friends
Of the River San Bernard presented
an award to Liz Kopecky for
outstanding support of the
Organization. Then, the festivities
began. There were cakes and cookies
galore, hot dogs with all the
trimmings and lots of new friends
everywhere.
Among the guests
present were: Representative Dennis
Bonnen, Commissioner Mary Ruth
Rodenbaugh, Sheriff Charles Wagner,
and Constable Fred Kanter to mention
a few. Members of the Brazoria
Lions Club, who graciously made
this dream come true for the young
organization, were there to extend
their congratulations and approval
of the new Community Center. In
addition to the Center's committee
members, many of the F.O.R.
Board of Directors were there
to welcome folks as they arrived.
As the evening wore on, more friends
joined the gathering as they were
getting home from work. The doors
remained open for all who wished to
visit and join in the fellowship
until very late into the evening.
All in all, it was a wonderful event
and a wonderful day for the
introduction of a home the community
can call their own.
Thanks so much to everyone who has
given of themselves - their time,
their donations, both monetary and
material - who have made this dream
a reality for everyone to share in.
Special thanks to the The
Brazoria County News and
The Facts, for helping us
spread the word "we're here and
ready for business".
The hinges on the doors will stay
well oiled because they will
be opened often, welcoming the many
friends in the many activities
planned for the Home of the
Friends Of the River San Bernard, the
F.O.R. Community Center. A
lot of new Friends were made
Friday. "It was a good day in the
neighborhood".
