History of
1st Saturday Breakfasts at Dido’s
Believe it or not,
Saturday, December 1st will be the first anniversary of the F.O.R. Breakfasts at
Dido’s. In honor of the auspicious occasion, we are planning a celebration.
That’s what River People do, right??? I think the general nature of people who
choose to be on the river like to gather friends and loved-ones together and
celebrate! As a matter of fact, that’s how the 1st Saturday Breakfasts began.
For those who haven’t heard the story, here it is …
My husband, Fred was the River Raiser Chairman last year, which was a huge
success. In order to celebrate with everyone that helped make it a success, he
asked Pete Smirch, owner of Dido’s if we could use their patio for a F.O.R.
Party. Pete’s response in his sometimes hard to understand, heavy accent was
"why sure – sure you can!" (Pete’s such a pushover!) We agreed that we would
have the party after hours to make sure we didn’t interfere with their normal
restaurant customers.
The week prior to Saturday, November 11, 2006 an invitation was posted on the
website that Friends Of the River was hosting a River Raiser Appreciation Party
at Dido’s. Fred & I cooked a big pot of gumbo, various others brought
appetizers, and we had "white elephant" door prizes, music, dancing and a whole
lot of fun. We stayed up way too late and I, for one, was dragging the next
morning. Fred woke up hungry as a bear and wanted menudo, a breakfast taco or
something along those lines. So we hopped in the car and headed for food. I said
call Pat & Connie, maybe they would like to join us; I dialed the phone and
handed it to Fred. Connie answered and Fred asked her, "What’s for breakfast?"
The three of us talked (Fred would say I was yapping in the background) all the
way from the 2611 caution light to Mendoza’s in Clute. The jest of the entire
conversation was that a restaurant on the river should be open for breakfast,
especially on the weekends! It would be a way for river folks to get acquainted
without the structure of a meeting – no agenda, no action items, no calendar;
friends coming together to enjoy each others company. When Fred & I broached Mr.
Pete & Ms. Sue with the idea of opening for breakfast the first Saturday of each
month, Fred said that F.O.R. Folks would happily cook, waitress and clean so he
wouldn’t be out the expense of hired help, Pete replied, "Guess we can try it."
(again… anything for the river!)

I encourage you to do two things after you read this post. Go back and read the
December 4, 2006 post on the website and Fred’s post from last Friday. The test
from December 4th gets an A+ in my book. Even though Pete was not on the
organizing committee, not a board member (YET!), not a committee chairman, I
submit that he has played an equally vital role in the success of this young
organization than any of us that have actually served in these capacities. Pete
and Sue
served as the 2006 & 2007 River Raiser kitchen team leaders and hosted the F.O.R.
February Anniversary meeting, the majority of all other public meetings, plus
most of the boat parade & river clean up prep meetings.
Pete & Sue recently retired and turned over the reigns of Dido's Restaurant to
Jeff Luckey and Andrew Alexander, who thankfully have carried on the tradition
of the 1st Saturday Breakfasts. Please join us this Saturday to celebrate our
breakfast anniversary with a special tribute.

Mouth News Update!
11/27
This letter is the first information, in
writing, that we have received about a drastic change in the direction being
taken by those working toward opening the mouth of the San Bernard River. We
first heard this information November 14, 2007 at the Brazoria Co. Shoreline
Restoration Task Force meeting. We were informed that the Corps of Engineers had
stepped up to take over the San Bernard River mouth opening project, but we had
no written confirmation of this information. Our understanding is as follows:
previously involved political entities will take on advisory positions. The
Corps of Engineers will “fast track” this project and contract bids are to be
ready to let by June of 2008. We have reason to believe that the recent changes
are a direct result stemming from A.S.A John Paul Woodley Jr.'s visit to the
river mouth, late last year, as part of a Gulf Coast tour arranged by
Congressman Ron Paul. (see Previous Posts Sept 2006)We only have the sketchiest
of details at this time, but are expecting more details and we will update you
as we get the information. Best case scenario would be a 400 foot wide by 4 foot
deep channel (mean low tide) by Christmas 2008.
Roy and Jan Edwards

Roy and Jan,
Not sure if you have heard, but the Corps of Engineers has now taken the lead on
the San Bernard project. We will be assisting through the project development
team. It has been set as a high priority by the Asst. Secretary of the Army.
Still looking at about a one year timeline or so.
Thanks,
