"Friends Of the
River"

Pete and
Sue Smirch
Pete and Sue of Dido’s Seafood
Restaurant fame, have been friends of the San Bernard River long before
Friends Of the River (F.O.R.) existed and probably before the majority of us
became "River People." They have participated in every boat parade and river
clean up in one capacity or another. They opened the restaurant 24 years ago. At
the time, it had sitting for 30 and today can easily handle 300.
Pete, who is of Jugoslavijan (now Croatian) descent, gave the restaurant its
name because his grandchildren called him "Dido" (pronounced Deed-does) which in
his native language means "grandpa". He named the restaurant in honor of all
grandfathers. Sue is the youngest of five children and is a native of the area,
growing up in Brazoria and Freeport. Pete and Sue met in Surfside -- it was love
at first sight. They are blessed with four lovely children; Joe, Jeff, Tonya and
Tina, plus eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Tonya’s youngest;
Rachel still works at the restaurant while attending nursing school. All of
their kids and many of the grandkids have participated in countless river
events, and helped Pete and Sue cook and serve restaurant customers.
Since
they retired this summer, they have been kicking up their heels (dancing) two
days a week, took an extended trip to the "Old Country" and seem to be having
the time of their lives. Tina, the youngest daughter said, "We can’t keep up
with them!"
Pete and Sue are tried and true Friends Of the River. What a fitting tribute to
recognize them as December’s Couple of the Month, especially since this
is the 1st Anniversary of our F.O.R.’s "Breakfast on the Bernard",
which would not have been possible without them providing a place for us to
congregate, eat and enjoy each other company.
Please join us this Saturday for a special breakfast in their honor. We are
requesting that everyone bring a Christmas ornament (either new or one from your
tree), sign it with a marker on the bottom. We are going to present them to Pete
and Sue as a testament to all the friends they have made at the restaurant.
