It’s a Dune Deal
What to do with that now
dead Christmas tree that recently graced your home and
protected the presents beneath it? It’s dry, and messy and
not good for much, right? Well – it may be dry and messy,
but it CAN be used for good in Brazoria County. It CAN be
the base on which protective sand dunes can grow along the
county’s eroding beaches in Quintana a d Surfside to help
stop the erosion instead of using up landfill space. It
takes about 1,000 trees to help create a sand dune for 1
mile of beach – and your old tree can help.
Why create sand dunes?
Well, the dunes are the first line of defense for our
beaches against storms, wind, and high tides and pounding
surf. They are the least expensive and most efficient
defense against the beach erosion that goes on every day.
If you want your tree to
help create new sand dunes, you can drop it off at several
places in Brazoria Co between December 26, 2007 and January
20, 2008. These depositories are: any Brazoria County
precinct in Alvin, Angleton, Brazoria, Clute and West
Columbia; and directly to the beaches at Surfside and
Quintana. Please remove all ornaments and tinsel from the
trees before leaving the trees for dune placement.
Don’t have a tree to
donate to the cause and you still want to help create new
sand dunes to protect our shoreline? Show up with work
gloves and a hammer and a willingness to help for Brazoria
County Dunes Day, Saturday, January 26 from 9 a.m.
until noon. The county will provide strings (to tie down the
trees) and the trees. Lunch will be provided after the trees
are placed. If you show up for Dunes Day, you have
your choice of locations in which to help: Stahlman Park, or
Quintana County Park.
If you have large loads
of trees, or you want more information on Dunes Day,
call Denise Grier at the Brazoria County Parks Dept. at
979-864-1541 or 979-236-4968, or the Brazoria County
Extension Agent, Rich Tillman, at 979-864-1558, ext. 112.
Want to start off the
year doing something positive? Come on down January 26 and
help build beaches – it’s something we can all do to help
our “neighborhood”.

What makes the
little
San Bernard River
Great?
What
do YOU think makes the San Bernard River
one of the best places in the world to
be? We all believe it is - or we
wouldn’t be Friends Of the River. But we
all have our thoughts on why it is
special - to us. Is it the fishing?
Water skiing or wake boarding? Or
something quieter, like bird watching,
kayaking or researching its rich
history? Do you have a story to tell -
or maybe an old family video of
something that happened along its banks?
If you do, F.O.R. would like your input.
Instead of a speaker for our 2nd
annual meeting in February, we thought
maybe many of our voices could tell our
own personal story of the river –
something we could tell our children for
generations to come. So, we are making a
documentary about the river. One of our
members, Rick Myers, a freelance photo
journalist, has volunteered his time and
talent to film the documentary – but we
need to know what our members would like
to see in it. It would be kind of like a
time capsule of our river and we need
your help to complete it in time.
If
you have an idea, a great story, a
legend, a picture, a video or just your
thoughts about what should be in the
documentary, we need your help!
Linda Wright has graciously volunteered
to collect our thoughts for the
documentary which will be shot and
prepared for the February meeting during
the month of January. So, time is of the
essence. If you have a contribution –
big or small – please contact Linda
Wright at
linda@sanbernardriver.com
and let her know what you think we
should add before the end of the year.
Think of your contribution as your
Christmas present to the river that
gives you joy all year long!
