General Information on Water Quality Training
By Al Rocco
Members of F.O.R. have volunteered to conduct water quality monitoring of the San Bernard River. Under the guidance of
"Texas Stream Team" staff and support partner, the Houston-Galveston Area Council, volunteers will complete three phases of
training in order to become Texas Stream Team
Certified Water Quality Monitors. The volunteers will be trained to collect quality assured information that can be utilized in
making environmental decisions regarding the river. Volunteers will be provided monitoring test kits and will be trained to effectively
measure physical and chemical parameters of river samples collected at selected monitoring points once a month. The data collected
will be maintained by the "Texas Stream Team" and will be available for anyone to review.
Texas Stream Team (formerly Texas Watch) is a network of trained volunteers and supportive partners working together to gather
information about the natural resources of Texas and to ensure the information is available to all Texans. The Texas Stream Team
is administered through a cooperative partnership between Texas State University, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
(TCEQ), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Currently, over 1,400 Texas Stream Team volunteers collect water
quality data on lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, bays, bayous, and estuaries in Texas.
Texas Stream Team water quality monitoring training will be conducted on April 5, 2008 at the F.O.R. Community Center.
Additional training is scheduled for June 4, 2008 at Challenger Park in Webster.
