Randall Groves’ Fishing Techniques Seminar a Hit!

Captain Randall Groves spoke to a standing room only crowd at the Friends Of the River San Bernard second in their bi-monthly free community lecture/workshop series, Friday, April 18.Over 42 people crowded into F.O.R Community Center (20450 C.R. 510 B in the Holiday Shores Subdivision, Brazoria) from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. to learn from the professional fishing guide.

The doors of the Community Center opened at 6 p.m. and provided plenty of snacks for our neighbors who attended. Captain Groves brought his brand new boat to show the crowd what he uses to stalk the fish in the flats and seminar attendees had a chance to see it up close and ask Captain Randall “boat “ questions before the seminar started.

Captain Groves brought some ”tried and true” equipment into the Community Center and at 7 p.m., Pat Webb, Community Center chairman introduced Captain Groves to the crowd who sat in rapt attention. Captain Groves began the lecture by showing the crowd the different rods he uses for different fishing applications. He moved on to discussing his favorite baits - he uses mostly artificial bait. He also covered his preferred fishing lines and how he loads a reel. He prefers a braided line over monofilament for sensitivity.

Captain Groves retrieved pat Webb from the audience to help him demonstrate knot tying.

The, Captain Groves fielded questions from the audience and there were plenty – like: where do I fish without a boat in the area? – To: can you show us how to tie that blood knot again? All too soon, it was 9 p.m. and time to go. It appeared that even the seasoned “old salts” who attended the seminar came away with some new information they could apply to their fishing bags of tricks. It was a good day in the neighborhood.

Captain Randall Groves is a professional Fishing Guide who owns Groves Guide out of Angleton, Texas. He specializes in helping fishermen navigate through some of Texas’ most scenic bayous and marshes in search of the big “salt water three”.  He is an expert fisherman using both artificial and live baits. He has spent years studying the feeding and migration patterns of Texas’ most sought after game fish. The Friends Of the River Community Center was acquired in August 2007, for the use of the community and to host F.O.R. events. Subjects of interest to the community will be planned for the third Friday of every other month. Some months and times will be adjusted to best serve the event being presented or to avoid conflict with other scheduled events -so monitor www.sanbernardriver.com for more information. Future lecture topics will include, but not be limited to, such things as boating safety and etiquette, fish identification, an ice cream social, story telling about the early days on the river, and an afternoon jam session by our local musicians. The F.O.R. Community Center Committee hopes that everyone will take advantage of the wonderful meeting place and visit every chance they get. This is just another way to give back to the community. None of this would be possible without you.

One of F.O.R.'s primary functions is to educate the public regarding the issues concerning the San Bernard River and it's Communities. Contact Pat Webb pat@sanbernardriver.com to schedule a guest speaker for your group or special event.
