While the weather
cooperated Saturday, May 3, 2008,
the Cleveland Wrecking Company was
taking down the Zeus, an abandoned
offshore rig, which has been
deteriorating at the opening of the
Freeport channel for 17 years. After
Saturday's work, two of the three
legs of the oil rig were down. Once
all three legs are down, it will
keep the top-heavy structure from
toppling into the channel, blocking
marine traffic to the port of
Freeport. The third leg (farthest
from the land) is scheduled to be
down within weeks with the bulk of
the Zeus out of the water by July.
Cleveland
Wrecking Company's contract calls
for the Zeus to be out of "harm's
way" by the beginning of Hurricane
season. Two down with one to go -
then all of us along the coast can
breathe a sigh of relief.
