F.O.R.’s
Adopt-A-Highway Effort July
Clean-up
Get ready to clean up our adopted
highway, FM 2918. Summer is here and
more people are traveling to the San
Bernard Refuge and FM 2918 boat ramp
– some leaving us reminders of their
visits. F.O.R. Is looking for 12
volunteer friends and neighbors to
clean up our 2 miles of FM 2918 on
Thursday, July 10 from 10 a.m. –
11:30 a.m. As part of F.O.R.’s
quarterly commitment to TxDOT’s
Adopt-a-Highway program. (Friends Of
the River San Bernard has adopted
the 2 miles of FM 2918 from FM 2611
to just above C.R. 868 for litter
control.)
The first quarterly road clean-ups
took place Saturday, April 5 and was
held in conjunction with Texas
Trash Off Day. On Thursday, July
10, F.O.R. Volunteers will be
cleaning up our adopted highway
after the big July 4th holiday
weekend and is scheduled on a
Thursday in order to encourage the
youth of the area out of school for
the summer holiday to participate.
The age requirement for
participation, set by the state is
"no children under age 7". Each
child 7 to 14 must be supervised by
a parent.
So, here is the F.O.R. Game plan.
July 10, the Adopt-a-Highway clean
up volunteers will meet at Bernard
Grocery at about 10:00 a.m. Where
Chairman
Pat Jankowiak will distribute
safety vests, bags, trash stabbers
(a.k.a. Flounder gigs) and give
final instructions before we move on
to our 2 miles of FM 2918 at about
10:30 to begin picking up trash. If
you are volunteering, make sure you
bring mosquito spray, sunscreen,
hats, gloves and boots. Trash bags
and cold water will be provided.
(There is a shortage of mowing
contractors this year and there will
be no mowing along this highway
prior to the clean-up – dress
appropriately.) If it rains, the
clean up will be held on Friday,
July 11.
The trash pick up will be over
around noon. There will be a picnic
luncheon provided for volunteers
immediately following the event.
