"Austin's
Liberation-Heritage
Ball"
Posted
by F.O.R. Member Bob
Schwebel
To commemorate Austin’s
return from 28 months in
Mexico — 16 months of
which were spent in
prison, Henry Austin
wrote of this ball in
his letter to Mrs.
Holley on Sept. 10,
1835:
“A Grand Dinner and
Ball were got up for the
occasion on two days
notice in a Manner very
creditable to the
Committee and port,” he
wrote. “There were 60
covers and despite the
short notice the table
was three times filled
by men alone. In the
evening the long room
was filled to a Jam at
least 60 or 80 ladies
who danced the sun up
and the Oyster Creek
girls would not have
quit then had not the
room been wanted for
breakfast — you never
saw such enthusiasm.”
These revelers
heard Stephen Austin’s
speech foreshadowing the
coming revolution as
they danced their way
into history.
The Brazoria Heritage
Foundation is again
re-creating the Historic
"Austin's
Liberation-Heritage
Ball" that occurred in
Brazoria on Sept 8th
1835, celebrating
Austin's return from a
Mexican prison. The
actual toasts and some
of Austin's speech will
be done by our members.
Beginning at 6:00 PM the
gourmet meal will be a
rib eye steak and turkey
with all the trimmings
followed by the toasts.
There will be a silent
and live auction and
dancing to the music of
Dog Town Blues. Some
folks wear period
costumes but it
definitely is not a
requirement. The tickets
are $30 each and a table
of eight is $240. All
proceeds benefit
Brazoria Heritage
Foundation and its
efforts to restore the
1933 Brazoria Elementary
School.
