I do what I do because this
is the only place I've
ever been that I understand "community"
- Jan Edwards, Unsung
Hero
As Brazoria County
Commissioner Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh says "Unsung Heroes"
are the lifeblood of Brazoria County.
This is especially true in
the case of F.O.R. member Janice Edwards.
As a board member and
Friends Of the River's press representative, Jan
has brought many talents to the F.O.R. table - her
journalism major and experience as press representative
for Texaco, free lance writing skills, research
experience and news industry contacts. She has written
numerous articles that have been published in local
newspapers and magazines on behalf of Friends Of the
River and recently was awarded The Dow
Chemical Company's "Community Catalyst Award" - and was
published in Smithsonian Magazine, with a
featured article on the San Bernard river mouth closure.
In her position as
F.O.R.'s press representative she helps promote F.O.R.
sponsored events and shares information that is
important to the community. Jan is also interested in
the history of the San Bernard River and has written
many stories posted on the F.O.R. website for all to
enjoy.
In addition to serving as
a board member with Friends Of the River, Jan was a
F.O.R original Organizing Committee member and is
currently involved with the following F.O.R. committees:
River Mouth, Logo Promotions, Website, F.O.R. Rangers,
Community Center, Adopt a Highway - and has just
completed workshops to become a Texas Stream Team
volunteer water quality monitor of the San Bernard
River.
Jan is also involved with our local Rivers End Volunteer
Fire Department as their press representative, is a
member of their Ladies Auxiliary and serves in many
capacities at their annual Fund Raiser. She is a member
of the Krewe of Port Freeport – who’s purpose is to
educate members about what is going on at the port and
to hear feedback from the public. Jan assists with
planning and set up at Brazoria County Day (2007 and
2009) held in Austin and she attends numerous monthly
public meetings, as a representative of Friends Of the
River.
What
will Jan do in the future? You can be sure her involvement
and dedication to Friends Of the River and the community
will continue.
