San Bernard River project postponed

Release # 080802

Aug. 19, 2008

The Galveston District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced a postponement in the

timeline for the work to reopen the mouth of the San Bernard River. The postponement, which is

estimated at four months, is a result of two actions required as part of the environmental phase of

the project.

First, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has requested formal consultation because of the

impact to 1.1 acres of piping plover critical habitat, which is protected under the Endangered

Species Act, as well as potential impact to nesting sea turtles. The second requirement is a water

quality certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Once these two

requirements are met, then the contracting bidding process can proceed, according to Corps

officials.

”Though both the community and the Corps of Engineers are anxious for this project to be

completed, following these requirements is crucial to its eventual success,” said Karl Brown,

Operations Project Manager overseeing the project. ”In the long run, the community benefits by

ensuring that these environmental issues are addressed.”

F.O.R. Invites Community to an Old – Fashioned Ice Cream Social and Story Telling Gathering

Can you remember sitting on top of your parents hand cranked ice cream freezer on top of an old quilt to hold it down as it got harder and harder to crank? Or was it your job to add the salt or more ice as it melted? On those hot summer days, nothing tasted better than ice cream you and your family and friends made. The stories everyone told were pretty good, too. But today, with Wii’s and Game Boys and Ipods, do your kids even know where ice cream comes from? Maybe you can give them the same sweet summer memory you enjoyed on Saturday, August 23, 2008, when Friends Of the River San Bernard  will dish out an old fashioned ice cream social at the  F.O.R Community Center (20450 C.R. 510 B in the Holiday Shores Subdivision, Brazoria) from 5 p.m. until the last story is told.

Anyone owning a hand crank (or electric) ice cream freezer and a great ice cream recipe is asked to bring their freezers and ice cream mixtures (and completed home made ice cream)  to the F.O.R. Community Center to make and enjoy home made ice cream - and memories for the community. There will be plenty of friends to taste test everyone’s offerings and plenty of youngsters to sit atop the hand cranked freezers hoping for the first taste of the finished product. F.O.R. will provide the ice for your freezers, but please bring the rock salt if you need it.

F.O.R. members have also been out talking to some of the river’s old timers – or people with stories of the old days on the river – and invited them to come out and regale the community with their stories. There’s no seminar this month – just this social outing. If you like home made ice cream, good stories, good company – or you just haven’t seen the F.O.R. Community Center yet, make plans to attend!

This is just another way to give back to the community. As the summer winds down, what better way to pass a sultry summer evening than by making and eating ice cream and “dishing” with your friends?
