August 2007 Summary of News, Accomplishments and Events

August 2 - F.O.R. President, Pat Webb and Logo Committee Chair Connie Webb were awarded an Unsung Heroes Award and River Mouth Chairman, Roy Edwards, was awarded a Finalist Award in The Facts’ Citizen of the Year Awards luncheon at the Civic Center in Lake Jackson.

August 3- F.O.R. Community Center legal documents were signed, for a 99 year lease with the Brazoria Lions Club.

August 4 – Breakfast on the Bernard at Dido’s. The featured couple of the month was Joyce and David Hooker. Approximately 90 members attended breakfast. 

August 8 – The Brazoria Co. Shoreline Restoration Task Force meeting was cancelled due to lack of agenda items.

August 9 – Members of F.O.R. Attended the Brazoria Chamber of Commerce After Hours gathering at Lone Star Bank in Brazoria.

August 9- Board of Directors Meeting at the F.O.R. Community Center.All board meeting agendas are posted on the Board of Directors page, prior to meetings.

August 9- A San Bernard river photo by F.O.R. Member Michelle Stroud was the cover photo used in the West of the Brazos magazine, supplement to The Brazoria County News

August 11- F.O.R. Held its annual Dock Hop – to create community spirit and draw attention to crime prevention. Local restaurants Dido’s, High 5 and 2J’s hosted river neighbors, with dinner specials to go along with the event. Deputy Sheriff P.J. Trotter distributed crime prevention packets at the restaurants.

August 14 - 17  F.O.R. Members did prep work on the F.O.R. Community Center anticipating the first Work Day.

August 18 - Pat Webb, F.O.R. President and Community Center remodel mgr, called for an official Work Day. Many members showed up to lend a hand in making the center F.O.R.’s new home.

August 20 – F.O.R. Mouth Committee Members attended area Chambers of Commerce luncheon featuring Senator John Cornyn.

August 22 -F.O.R. President Pat Webb, Vice President Tom Valliere and River Mouth Chairman Roy Edwards gave a presentation about F.O.R. And the San Bernard River to the Clute Evening Lion’s Club.

August 22- Environmental Committee meeting at F.O.R. Community Center

August 26 – Members attended Congressman Ron Paul’s Birthday Bash.

August 26-Jan Edwards, P.R. Rep. And F.O.R. Director was featured in the Today’s Woman section in The Facts.

August 27- Executive Committee meeting - Agenda set for next Board meeting.

August 28- Deadline for Board Nominations. F.O.R.'s attorney, Lynn Klement, will preside over vote count at election meeting.

Environmental Team Mission Statement: Ensure a safe clean river for recreational use, safe both for human and animal life.


Committee members include: Chairman Fred Kanter, Suzie Alford, Bruce Barner, Barbara Fritilla, Brian Meaghar, Elizabeth Moore, Vanessa Taylor, Al Roco, and Colleen Robertson. New member this month: Pat Jankowiak.

August 22- Meeting at F.O.R. Community Center: -Guests: Gayla Stock, Nancy Kanter

Gayla Stock, HGAC’s Texas Watch volunteer monitoring coordinator, gave a presentation that encompassed details of the Texas Watch program and professional monitors. Discussions were on: Conservative Trust, (Sweeny and CISD high school science students) water sampling, HGAC training, Map and Information Boards to be placed at boat ramps.

River Mouth:
Roy Edwards

August 20-Members of the Mouth Committee, Roy Edwards, Jan Edwards, Darrell Powell and Gloria Powell, attended the local area Chambers combined luncheon featuring Senator John Cornyn. The committee members had about 5 minutes one-on-one with Senator Cornyn where they requested his help in getting Ron Paul’s request for 5 million dollars to re-open the mouth of the San Bernard River added to the 2007 Energy and Water Bill. The committee presented the Senator with a binder of river studies and other reference materials.

August 22- River Mouth presentation given to Clute Evening Lions Club by Roy Edwards,Tom Valliere and Pat Webb.

August 26 – Members attended Congressman Ron Paul’s Birthday Bash and talked with the Congressman’s aide about the river and progress made towards reopening of the river mouth.

Adopt A Highway

Pat Webb will be working with TxDOT, to get the program started.

 F.O.R. San Bernard Adopt a Highway signs have been placed on F.M. 2918. Work day will cover 2 miles of highway clean up -There will be four work days a year.

Artie Burnett and Roy Edwards have each made and submitted lists of necessary work and items needed to bring the community center up to date, both indoors and out- Plans are for several more scheduled member workdays. F.O.R. Volunteers and River Mouth Committee members are continuing with weekly lawn maintenance. Read more about the Community Center efforts in August Previous Posts on the website. Open house will be announced soon.
