Clean
Team
David
Pope
At the suggestion of our Clean Team
Chairman, ConocoPhillips donated materials
from two demolished piers from the San
Bernard Terminal to Brazoria County for use
to maintain parks, boat ramps, and fishing
piers.*Through
the
efforts of David
Pope, and many others, the Spirit C
was removed from the river.
*Clean Team members
presented Ms.
Yetta Hustead with a framed sign, created
from parts of
the Spirit C.*The
grant for reconstruction of
the boat
ramp/dock facilities at Hwy. 35 has been
accepted, according to a report from Mark
Hansen, Director Brazoria County Parks
Dept. Announcements should be made soon for
a possible start date. *
Research is underway with National River
groups and
Keep Texas Beautiful,
concerning Youth
Educational programs
and activities.*David
was invited as a speaker, and asked to
assist the Keep Brazoria Beautiful
Association with two projects: One is a
county wide effort to Clean Up Waterways,
based on the successful clean-ups of the San
Bernard River. The other is an effort
similar to the Adopt A Highway, but
is for county roads that lead to parks and
boat ramp areas.

Environmental
Fred
Kanter
Committee
members include Suzie Alford, Bruce
Barner, Barbara Fritilla, Brian Meaghar,
Elizabeth Moore, Vanessa Taylor, Our
first meeting was held January 26th
.Assignments were given to committee
members to investigate present river
water testing done by governmental
agencies and industry. Some reports
came back at the February 12th
meeting. Also, some information was
obtained about Texas Watch, which is a
citizens group to help with
environmental studies. Possible
contaminates discussed include
Pesticides, Hydrocarbons, Brine
concentration, Fertilizers, Home sewage,
Home "gray water". Barbara is looking
into laws concering gray water. (It is
not our intention to be a watch dog, but
to inform you.) Suzie has taken on the
project of compiling a detailed map and
incorporating that with an environmental
board that will possibly be located at
our boat ramps. It is felt that
Community Awareness and Education may be
a good goal for our committee. A way to
achieve community awareness might be to
enlist assistance of high school
students to conduct river water
sampling. Elizabeth has agreed to look
into that. Bruce and I were welcomed
into the CAPS organization; thanks to
Vanessa's help and we have attended each
meeting with ConocoPhillips and Chevron
Phillips. A river drill will be coming
up in April. More to come on this
later, so stay tuned.

published about the river or F.O.R. in local
publications. However, January 12, Friends of
the River San Bernard was interviewed for an
article in Image Magazine which will be
distributed statewide in the next publication.
(This magazine has historically been published
quarterly, but may now be published every other
month, so that will determine the publication
date.) The same interview may be used to create
stories for alternative magazines. In addition,
event dates were sent in to A Guide to
Brazoria County (published by The Facts
in March and used all year round by Chambers of
Commerce and the Economic Alliance. Scheduled
events were also sent to the calendars of the
Texas Co-Op Power magazine, Texas
Country Reporter, the Brazoria, Sweeny, and
West Columbia Chambers of Commerce and Texas
Highways magazine.
