F.O.R. San Bernard Activity Update

March  2007

Just like a boat, an organization has many functioning and vital components. There’s the galley, and of course the head, there’s the bow berths and there’s the aft lockers..............all very important.................but you need power to get that boat moving..........you need an engine.......a transmission that comes in handy for when you need to back up............. you need a Propeller to make it all move........the Prop has to be strong to withstand all types of elements.........hard and strong against the currents to get you where you are headed............and most of all you need a solid rudder to keep your boat headed in the right direction......

David Pope, the trash dude.

Clean Team

David Pope

March 1st David investigated dumping reports on Pan American Rd. and found large amount of debris, so he called in Brazoria Co. Environmental Officers to deal with the problem. Holeman (Gail Brinson), Emily and David conducted a mini-clean up Saturday March 10- Nelson Taylor and John Wallace assisted with unloading approximately 1500 pounds of debris. While around the FM 522 Black’s Ferry Bridge David checked out the dumping problems around that area. Texas Department of Transportation Maintenance Supervisor, Marilyn Morgan, visited the site and as a result the clean-up took place the next day.  On March 28, had a series of phone calls and e-mails with Mark Hansen, Brazoria County Parks Director about sign regulations at public boat ramps. Mr. Hansen will get more information from Texas Parks and Wildlife concerning signs on public property and will get back to us.

April 21 Earth Day Event from 10 a.m. - 2 pm - F.O.R San Bernard's Clean Team, Environmental, and River Mouth Committees will man a booth at the Environment-fest at Brazos Mall. Please contact a committee chairman to volunteer to help.

April 28 Spring Clean will be held on the San Bernard - planning meetings are now being held regularly. Stay updated on meeting times, dates- by checking the Spring Clean Tab on the website.

Environmental

Fred Kanter

Committee members include Suzie Alford, Bruce Barner, Barbara Fritilla, Brian Meaghar, Elizabeth Moore, Vanessa Taylor.

On March 13th the Environmental Committee met at 6:30 p.m. and continued our review of goals - water quality being at the top of the list.  A prototype of a map of the river that Suzie Alford is working on was presented.  Our goal is to have these maps with environmental messages mounted at most of the boat ramps (upon approval of proper authorities).  We welcomed two new members to our team; Colleen Robertson and Al Roco.  Both have environmental experience with TCEQ.  Action items were assigned to various members and the next meeting date was set April 17th at 7 pm.    Remember, Envirofest is Saturday, April 21st at the Brazos Mall.  Our team will be part of the F.O.R. display.  We will also be represented at Earth Day, at Brazos Bend State Park Saturday, 4/14 from 9 - 5.  NOTE: 4/17 Conoco Phillips will be conducting a simulated drill at the river.  Several of our members will act as monitors.
