Summary of News, Accomplishments and Events for November-December 2007

November 2007

November 3-1st Saturday Breakfast on the Bernard. Approx 110 members attended. Karyn and Ed Kadera were honored as Couple of the Month.

November 3- Friends Of the River was represented at a ceremony and luncheon, honoring Stephen F.Austin, in West Columbia.

November 5-Community Center members Darrell and Gloria Powell designed and built new window cornice boards for the F.O.R. Community Center.

November 7-Mouth committee chairman, Roy Edwards resigned from his chair position. Roy will continue serving the mouth committee, as a committee member. A new chairperson is being sought.

November 8-Community Center members prepared the center for the upcoming open house event- yard maintenance and interior clean up.

November 8-Board of Directors monthly meeting. Board of Director meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at the F.O.R. Community Center.

November 9-F.O.R. Community Center "Open House" and Ribbon Cutting ceremony, officiated by the Brazoria Chamber of Commerce.Read more here:http://sanbernardriver.com/2008/index.htm

November 14-F.O.R. Community Center Committee meeting. Held the third Wednesday of every month at Community Center.

November 14-Members of F.O.R..'s Mouth Committee attended the Brazoria County Shoreline Task Force meeting.

November 20-Members met to discuss a new program "River Rangers" at the F.O.R. Community Center.

November 26-Members of F.O.R.'s Mouth Committee along with Commissioner "Dude" Payne met with Congressman Nick Lampson re support of reopening the mouth of the river.

November 26-Roy Edwards was invited to speak on behalf of F.O.R., concerning San Bernard River mouth issues, at the Brazosport Rotarian meeting in Lake Jackson.

November 26-Executive Committee meeting. Agenda set for December board meeting. Meeting agendas are posted on the website/Board of Directors page, prior to the meeting.

November 27-Members of F.O.R.'s Logo Committee created F.O.R. Christmas displays at the storefront of Quality Power products in Brazoria.

December 2007

December 1-1st Saturday Breakfast on the Bernard. Approximately 70 members attended. Pete and Sue Smirch, former owners of Dido's Restaurant, were honored as Couple of the Month and were given a member-decorated Christmas tree, honoring their past and continued support of Friends Of the River.

December 7-Mouth committee members, Roy and Jan Edwards represented F.O.R. At a holiday reception given by the Port of Freeport. Read more about the Port of Freeport Krew program here http://sanbernardriver.com/2008/index.htm

December 8-Friends Of the River presented the 21st Annual San Bernard River Boat Parade and Home Decorating Show, under the direction of Vanessa and Nelson Taylor, F.O.R. Parade Committee Chairmen. December 8-F.O.R. Community Center opened to the pubic for parade viewing. 200+ in attendance. Santa was on hand to hear the children's wishes, while parade viewers donated new toy items to the Friends Of the River "Toys for Tots" donation box. http://sanbernardriver.com/2008/index.htm

December 12-Mouth Committee members attended the Brazoria County Shoreline Restoration Task Force meeting- C.E.P.R.A. And C.I.A.P. Funding update.

December 12-F.O.R. Community Center meeting. Held the third Wednesday of every month at Community Center.

December 13- F.O.R.'s Environmental Committee, with board approval, will proceed with plans to place detailed, educational kiosks at the following three locations. F.M. 2611 boat ramp, F.M.521 boat ramp and the F.O.R. Community Center.

December 13-Board of Director meeting. Board of Director meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at the F.O.R. Community Center

December 14- Galveston Corps of Engineers announces plans to reopen the mouth of the San Bernard River.
