River Raiser Fundraiser October 13– Members of F.O.R. Sold raffle tickets for the River Raiser at Churchill Grocery. October 20- A Breakfast Meeting was held by committee members and volunteers to discuss details of the upcoming event. Members have spent many hours this month to ensure a fun filled event.
October 28-The 2nd Annual Friends Of the
River 'River Raiser' fundraiser was held
and considered a huge success. A very
special thank you to all F.O.R. Members- and
to everyone who donated and participated in
any way to make the event a success. Gross
proceeds
from the event totaled $24,502, which after
expenses of $5, 472 left net profit of our
2007 River Raiser at $19, 030. *See River

Environmental Team Mission Statement:
Ensure a
safe clean river for recreational use, safe
both for human and animal life. October 11- Susie Alford was interviewed and accepted by the Board of Directors, as F.O.R. San Bernard's new Environmental Chairman. - Retiring chairman, Fred Kanter, will remain on the committee as an active member. *October 10 - First river water sampling day. Five sites were selected for sampling. Samples will be collected quarterly. *As previously reported in September - F.O.R.'s environmental committee has been contacted by Jean Wright, of *HGAC, and asked to supply information, concerning water sampling points on the San Bernard. This will include the entire river, from New Ulm to the Mouth, with sampling done every other month, at 12 points along the river. The start date of this program will be this month or early October. Continuing action items: Conservation Trust, Texas Watch Sample Training for area High Schools science students- Signage at boat ramps along river- Permission has been granted by Brazoria County Parks dept. To put up signs; Susie will submit to board for funding of the boards, 5 signs are desired with locations at F.M. 2611, F.M. 521, F.M. 2918, FOR Community Center, and Hwy. 35. The Environmental team will provide labor and cement ; Signs will include area map and 'you are here' markers, river and outline of watershed with major roads, one side will be printed with upcoming F.O.R. events and the opposite side will include current wildlife- like migrating birds of the season and other environmental information.Next Meeting: 7:00 p.m. November 13-F.O.R. Logo Promotions: Regular committee members include: Judy Burnett, Gloria Powell, Jeanette Swatloski, Peggy Davidson, Jana Gardner, Vicki Head, Wayne Head, Jan Edwards, Teresa Schlumpberger. This list of regular members does not include the many wonderful and appreciated Project Volunteers that have been called on to help with projects, and work days. October 28- Committee members and project volunteers decorated the K.C. Hall for the 2nd Annual River Raiser fundraiser. River Raiser table centerpieces were designed and created by the Friends Of the River logo committee. Chairman Connie Webb worked with Clara Nauman of Brazoria Florists to create " I am the River" themed centerpieces for each guest table and numerous buffett and dessert tables. Members and volunteers donated seashells, collected sand, driftwood and other items used in the (mostly) river supplied natural decorations. The merchandise booth at River Raiser, was set up and manned by committee members, Jeanette Swatloski and Peggy Davidson. All F.O.R. Logo© merchandise is on display at these locations- 2J's, Dido's and Quality Power -as well as on the website. Order forms and photos can be found on the website. Ideas and suggestions always appreciated and volunteers welcomed with enthusiasm! October 1 – Members
of the Mouth Committee met
with Brazoria Co. officials to locate plats
of possible land ownership at the original
location of the October 10 - F.O.R. Mouth committee and member volunteers hosted TxDot meeting/ luncheon at the new Community Center. F.O.R.’s River Mouth Chairman, Roy Edwards, was contacted by TxDOT representative for this project, Jennifer Moczygemba, early in October requesting an investigational field trip to the mouth. The field trip came together, Wednesday October 10 with about 40 representatives from the following groups attending: TxDOT; Diana Kile from Congressman Ron Paul’s office; National Marine Fisheries Service; the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Galveston office; Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas General Land Office, Brazoria Co. Commissioner Donald “Dude Payne (Pct.1), Brazoria County Commissioner Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh (Pct.4); Brazoria County Engineering Dept.; Brazoria County Flood Control; Brazoria County Parks Dept.; the Brazoria County Shoreline Restoration Task Force; and members of F.O.R.’s Mouth Committee and Board of Directors. The river mouth committee work is ongoing-daily, working in every way possible towards the reopening of the mouth of the San Bernard River, and ensuring the future of the same. Thank you F.O.R. A Highway Pat Webb has been working with TxDOT, to get the Adopt A Highway program started. Now it is ready for a permanent manager. F.O.R. San Bernard Adopt a Highway signs have been placed on F.M. 2918. Work day will cover 2 miles of highway clean up. There will be four work days a year. There is very little time involved - but a lot of satifaction. Please contact Pat or any board member, if you would like more information about managership of the Adopt-A-Highway program. Community Center Pat Webb, Remodel mgr. Friends Of the River Community Center is located at 20450 County Road 510B-Holiday Shores Subdivision. October 1- The kitchen floor was scraped and prepared for tile installation by committee members October 2- Tile installation service donated by Coy Smith. Ceramic tile donated by Eveline and Robert Nachtengale October 6 - Central air conditioning installation service was donated Jeff Stegall , assisted by committee members and F.O.R. volunteers. Air conditioning unit donated by Robin and Keith Hardwicke. October 9- Yard maintenance done, and building was cleaned and prepared for TxDOT meeting. October 10- F.O.R. volunteers prepared and served a luncheon of bbq sandwiches, chips, drinks and desserts to the participants of the TxDOT meeting. October 20- Danny Leist volunteered his services and equipment to dig ditches , in preparation for outdoor electrical service. October 21- Electric lines were laid and ditches covered by F.O.R. volunteers. October 24- Coastal Graphics crew installed new Friends Of the River sign, created and donated by Ken Siegrist. October 25- Outdoor yard lighting and new lighting over the new F.O.R. sign completed by Pat Webb October 25- Yard and building made ready for rental. October 27- First rental of the F.O.R. Community Center. River Mouth Committee and other F.O.R. members have continued with the weekly lawn care, and tree trimming. Volunteers have given many, many hours of hard work again this month, and it shows-the Community Center remodel work is almost complete-and is much appreciated by all F.O.R. members. There has been a lot of hard work accomplished in a very short time! I sincerely apologize if I have missed any accomplishments or contributions - the outpouring of support for this "project" has just been overwhelming! -Pat Webb
