Corps of Engineers plans to reopen
San Bernard
Friends of the River San Bernard are celebrating a special Christmas gift from
the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Reopening the mouth of the river has always been the first focus of the
organization, and last week word came that the Corps Galveston District has
announced it is now planning to undertake the project.
Sand has closed the mouth of the river, and the water flow has been diverted
into the Intracoastal waterway, creating unsafe conditions for navigation. When
the water empties into the Intracoastal it flows eastward to the Brazos River
flood gates, and the increased velocity of the current has caused problems for
navigation on the Intracoastal waterway.
“We are looking at several channel width and depth alternatives to reopen the
mouth of the San Bernard River near its historical location,” said Colonel David
C. Weston, Galveston District commander.
“The Corps is working in concert with the local sponsor, the Texas Department
of Transportation, and all relevant governmental agencies to find that
affordable solution,” Weston said. “We hope to have a contract award by the end
of the fiscal year, with the actual work beginning shortly thereafter.”
