BRAZORIA

River group honored

The founders of Friends of the River San Bernard, a group dedicated to resurrecting the San Bernard River, were honored with the Smithsonian Institute and Dow Chemical Co.’s Community Catalyst Award.

In the first presentation of the award, Jan and Roy Edwards of Brazoria won out among 200 other applicants across the country, Edwards said.

The couple was featured in this month’s edition of Smithsonian magazine. They put the $1,000 prize toward improving the Friends of the River Community Center along the banks of the San Bernard. Jan Edwards said they were able to purchase the materials for five well-made picnic tables.

Group members assembled and welded the aluminum and treated-wood tables at the center, she said.
