‘ANOMALIES’ FOUND IN MOUTH OF SAN BERNARD RIVER

A marine archeologist conducting an environmental assessment of the possible effect of re-opening the San Bernard River mouth has found several anomalies consistent with the presence of sunken boats, Friends of the River San Bernard representative Jan Edwards said.

“These anomalies may or may not be eligible for registry with the Texas Historical Commission and could require further investigation to positively identify them,” said Martie Cencki, public affairs chief for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Galveston. “The current plan is to avoid the anomalies by adjusting the channel alignment. Corps of Engineers Environmental Section is working closely with the Texas Historical Commission to determine if avoiding the anomalies is a feasible alternative.”

Edwards said so far the project remains on schedule, but she is not sure if this will have a negative effect on it. The mouth is set to be re-opened in September, she said.
