River event a chance to
meet the neighbors
Published August 12,
2008
For the past two years,
Friends Of the River San Bernard has
encouraged residents to participate in
National Night Out with a “dock hop.” This
year, National Night Out was moved to
October, but plans for the event were made
before the change. This year’s Dock Hop will
be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
National Night Out is designed to heighten
crime and drug prevention awareness,
generate support for local anticrime
programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and
police-community partnerships, and send a
message to criminals letting them know
neighborhoods are organized and committed to
watch out for one another.
The San Bernard River community is not your
typical neighborhood, it is a linear
community woven together by the river. It is
important for these residents who do not
live in a subdivision to get out and meet
their neighbors. That’s what the Dock Hop is
all about.
The hop will occur between the FM 521 bridge
and the FM 2611 bridge. Residents on the
Sweeny (west) side of the river between the
bridges will play host to their neighbors.
Residents on the Brazoria (east) side of the
river between the bridges will be the dock
hoppers, taking their boats from one dock to
the next.
Residents on the Sweeny side of the river,
but outside the bridges, can bring their
favorite snacks and beverages to the F.O.R.
Community Center, 20450 CR 510-B, and host
from there. Residents on the Brazoria side
of the river who own boats can hop to their
neighbors’ docks anywhere between the
bridges. Those without boats can drive to
the community center and enjoy the
fellowship there.
There will be a vote on the best dessert,
appetizer/snack, and beverage at
www.sanbernardriver.com. Prizes will be
awarded.
