Boat Handling and Safety Topic at
F.O.R. Community Center Lecture Series
Friends Of the River San Bernard announces the third in their bi-monthly free community lecture/workshop series. Friday, June 20, representatives from the Gulf Coast Emergency Rescue Squad, The Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Galveston Bay Sail and Power Squadron, will cover pertinent boat handling and safety topics (what to do and who to call in case of emergency, safety requirements for boats, rules of the water road navigation aids, etc.) to help us all have fun and be safe as boating season on the river heats up with the summer. The workshop will take place at the F.O.R Community Center (20450 C.R. 510 B in the Holiday Shores Subdivision, Brazoria) from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. The doors of the Community Center will open at 6 p.m. to provide plenty of time to visit with your neighbors before the presentation begins.
James F. Gore, second term President, will be making the presentation for the Gulf Coast Emergency Rescue Squad. He is a native Texan and resident of Lake Jackson, Texas and is quite knowledgeable about boating and other water activities. In addition to being the president of the Gulf Coast Emergency Rescue Squad, he also serves as a board member of CCA Texas and CCA Brazoria County where he is the New Tide Coordinator. He is also in his sixth year volunteering at Sea Center Texas and is the Area Chief of Texas Parks and Wildlife Angler Education Instructor.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is sending three representatives: Vice Commander and Flotilla Staff Officer, Deborah Morales; Flotilla Staff Officer for Public Affairs, Peggy White; and Flotilla Commander and Operations Officer, Trevor Jones.
Vice Commander Deborah Morales lives in Richmond, Texas and has worked for Aramco Services since 1991. She currently serves with Environmental Services as ASC. She joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in June 2003 with duties that include: maintaining the Vessel Emergency Response Plans (keeping them current with federal regulatory agencies), checking MARSEC (what’s this?) levels, Crude Vessel Position Reports, Weather reports (to update Emergency Duty Officers) and Vessel Schedule. In addition, under Incident Command System/Logistics, she is responsible for identifying personnel dispatched to an incident, determining initial support operations, activating facilities, providing sleeping facilities, communications security services, facility maintenance services, demobilizing facilities and maintaining records and logs.
Peggy White has been a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for two years. She is currently assigned as Flotilla Staff Officer for public affairs. She is a nurse by profession and has recently retired. She is also a retired Law Enforcement Officer. Peggy resides in Rosenberg, Texas.
Trevor Jones has been a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for five years. He is currently the Flotilla Commander and serves as Operations Officer. Trevor is a retired Law Enforcement Officer and resides in West Columbia, Texas.
The Galveston Bay Sail and Power Squadron will be represented by Frank and Janet Boerner. The Galveston Bay Sail and Power Squadron is a non-profit organization whose main goal is boating safety and education. Both Frank and Janet have been with the organization for 8 years. Frank serves as the Executive Officer and Janet is the Educational Officer. In addition to their presentation, the Boerners will be bringing information on the many programs that the Galveston Bay Sail and Power Squadron organization has to offer the public.
The Friends Of the River Community Center was acquired in August 2007, for the use of the community and to host F.O.R. events. Subjects of interest to the community will be planned for the third Friday of every other month. Some months and times will be adjusted to best serve the event being presented or to avoid conflict with other scheduled events -so monitor www.sanbernardriver.com for more information. Future lecture topics will include, but not be limited to, such things fish identification, an ice cream social, story telling about the early days on the river, and an afternoon jam session by our local musicians. The F.O.R. Community Center Committee hopes that everyone will take advantage of the wonderful meeting place and visit every chance they get. This is just another way to give back to the community. None of this would be possible without you.
